Some People Don't Like 'Em...

...but we do.
These bright bursts of sunshine are all over our yard; and you know what?  We love 'em.
As we drive around town or through the countryside, my boys exclaim excitedly over yards that are full of dandelions...and have zero enthusiasm for yards that are barren of them.  Which leads me to the question:  who gets to decide that dandelions are weeds anyway?  We think they're beautiful flowers.  How blessed we are to have so many of them right outside our house where we can see them every day!  ;-)

********

Warning:  disgusting pictures ahead.  Look away now if you're squeamish.  ;-)

Some people think they're gross...
...these worms of ours that I discovered as I emptied some of the incredibly rich soil from our compost pile and spread it beside a row of potatoes I planted this afternoon.
But I was delighted to see them.  They are SO GOOD for the soil!  So even though they have a resemblance to my most dreaded enemy--snakes--I don't feel a bit of apprehension when I see--or touch--these squirmy fellows.  And even though I don't find these pictures the least bit attractive (and in fact, I'm surprised that I'm even posting them because I'm sure I'm going to be grossed out in the future when I stumble across this post again!), I was almost cooing when I plunged my pitchfork into the compost pile and drew out that first big clump and spotted so many of these fantastic soil-enrichers.

Dandelions and earthworms:  just two of the many simple pleasures of life in the country during springtime.  :)

The Fun House

I've been thinking...

...about the role of parents in a family,
the way we are an umbrella for our children,
socialization (the big "S" word for homeschoolers...but c'mon, in almost every situation, the "how are you going to socialize your kids?" argument against homeschooling is so outdated as to be slightly ridiculous),
our desire to protect our children from the "junk" that is so prevalent in society,
our even stronger desire to prepare our children to live in and be a light in that society,
the foolishness of youth (especially when they have slumber parties),
and the like.

You know, light frivolous thoughts.

Or not.

Each of those topics deserves its own post; but it's against the backdrop of those thoughts, that I've been remembering the wise advice to make your home the house that all the neighborhood kids want to come to...and how you should invite your kids' friends over to your house so that you not only get to know your kids' friends and see how they interact with your children, but you can also create great memories for them and pour out love on them, some of whom may not receive as much as they should in their own homes.  I've heard the sages say, "Be the cool parents--NOT in the sense of getting rid of all boundaries for your kids and their friends and letting them do whatever they want, but in the way of being involved with your children and their friends, genuinely having fun with them, opening your home to them, giving them a warm welcome and a truly interested listening ear, etc."

When I read back over that, I think to myself, "That really applies more in the teen years, and my oldest child is only eight!"

True.  But those are the kinds of things I've been thinking about, and all of that flashed through my mind today when a new item showed up at our house.

It had four legs...
...a Rhino insignia...
...two, in fact (which reminded me so much of our good friends Aldo & Maggie in California, because Aldo's favorite animal is a rhino).
It looked like this on its top.
Here's a much more helpful clue.
Did you figure it out yet?
Of course!  It's an air hockey table!
Air hockey just happens to be my favorite game of this sort (much preferred by me to pool or ping-pong or foosball), but we weren't planning to buy it and hadn't talked about it or anything--not even a single conversation, like "wouldn't it be nice if we had air hockey?"  Nothing.  But Jeff happened to spot a note on Facebook from an acquaintance who was moving and needed to sell their air hockey table.   He contacted them; and lo and behold, this showed up today, making some boys--and their mommy--very happy indeed.
Even Tobin got into it...
...though he needed a little help from his biggest brother.  :)
When Josiah and David played together, they were a formidable foe, especially when David had a mallet in each hand and was in charge of defense, and Josiah could use his longer arms on offense.  I played against them--and beat them--but it wasn't easy.  ;-)
It also wasn't easy to beat Jeff.  That's precisely why I DIDN'T beat him.  But I will.  One of these days.  If Jeff comes home from work tomorrow and there's no supper on the table and the house is a wreck and he wonders what's going on, I'll just say, "Oh, you know, I've been busy.  Busy practicing air hockey, that is.  Want a rematch?"  ;-)

I'm immensely grateful for Jeff showing us his love in this way.  To me, this air hockey table represents so much:  obviously, the memories that will be made as we play together as a family, the laughter we'll share around it, the opportunities for teaching good sportsmanship and sharing, the hours that the boys will be happily occupied with this game as they interact together and even get a little exercise.  But even more, it means something deeper to me.  It means that our home is a fun place to be.  It's the kind of home I'd like to grow up in.  Oh, wait, I DID grow up in this home.  ;-)   (For newer blog readers, I'll mention that when we moved back from Israel, my parents sold us this house and moved into a smaller house on the property, so I am now living in the house in which I was raised.)

My fervent hope is that, as my sons become adults and leave our nest, they'll be forever bonded--to Jeff and I, to each other, and to God.  Maybe, just maybe, the memories of time spent together around this air hockey table will be part of the strong cement that keeps our hearts together.

********

So I was thinking these thoughts...and I had pulled out the camera to take pictures of the air hockey table...and then I kept walking and snapping pictures, trying to capture the quiet beauty and joy of this ordinary-yet-wonderful day.

With temperatures in the low 80s...
it was a glorious day to be outside.  Josiah and David and I had taken a little trip to an abundantly-stocked and well-run greenhouse near us, and we returned with a variety of lovely plants...
...including marigolds.  For the first time, the boys each have a little section of the garden for their own; and after surveying the choices at the greenhouse, David declared that he wanted to plant marigolds.
So we got some.  He might branch out and include more than just marigolds; but if not, that's fine, too.  His daddy's got it covered, as far as planting other things.  :)
While I was watching Jeff plant lettuce and broccoli, I was also admiring the neighbor's newly-cut field.
I mean, look at those rows!   One thing is for sure, when we lived in Southern California and then in Israel, I YEARNED for such fresh, open, green, living beauty out my windows.  And now we have it in abundance.  What a gift!
I checked on the peas, and they're looking quite fine, thank you.  It appears that I'll actually get to shell some this year--oh, joy!  (That is not sarcastic, by the way.)  :)
My tulips, although stuck in a flowerbed so weedy that it doesn't even seem like a flowerbed, still dazzle with their beautiful spring colors.
I had never paid much attention to our English walnut trees in early blossom, but I did today, and this is what I found.  Isn't that strange-looking?!  And to think that I had never noticed it.
Jeff did some tilling...
 ...while barefoot...
...in preparation for more planting.  Planting what, you ask?
Potatoes, expertly cut by these hands...
 ...hands that I love...
...hands that taught me how to cut towards myself, into my thumb, without causing any damage.
Whose hands?  Well, I call her Mother...
...but this little sweetheart calls her Grandma.  Can you tell how much they love each other?

Ah, so many pictures.  So much delight.  So many memories stored up for the future.  And I didn't even mention all the other things that made this day so nearly perfect:  things like two great violin lessons for Josiah (a private lesson and a group one), my dad's first-ever game of air hockey (I beat him), the two Lego sets that Josiah and David were able to buy with their own money (helped along by Grandma Fisher who kindly sent David some birthday money), the delicious taquitos that Jeff made for our dinner, Tobin's new haircut and his excitement about his breakfast out with his daddy, a new spring tablecloth (which, even though it's plastic, elicited an excited "I really like this tablecloth!" comment from Josiah when he saw it spread on the table), Shav's giggles when he was trying to run away from me after his bath and I was chasing him on my hands and knees, the satisfaction of all the dishes being washed, a little time spent organizing school supplies and planning for next year...

Today was the kind of day that I'd like to bottle up to store for the future.

I guess that's what I just did.

Before my head hits the pillow tonight, I'll breathe an extra prayer of gratitude to God:  for my fun house, my fun family, and this very, very fun day.

"He Has Your Hair"

...Jeff tells me as he looks at Shav.
"What exactly is he trying to say?" I think to myself.  "Is he implying that I need to do a better job of combing my hair because it sticks up in the back like Shav's does?"  ;-)
Actually, I know precisely what he's saying.
After three boys with hair nearly as straight as rulers, it's nice to see a little curl in this boy's hair...just like mine.
But now that it's long enough to see it, I suppose it's about time for a haircut.
Goodbye, little waves.  It's hard to stick around with a barber in the house.  ;-)

Recipe Box - Caribbean Chicken Stew

I wanted to do David's birthday post this evening, but I'm having trouble uploading any videos...and what fun is a birthday post without videos?  (Especially when Thomas was involved...)  ;-)  I'm not sure if the video problem is a Blogger issue...or my computer's fault...or simply user error.  Hopefully it will work itself out soon!

In the meantime, how about a recipe?  :)

This recipe showed up in my inbox almost two years ago, sent in a FlyLady email.   I'll readily admit that, even though I've gleaned MANY wonderful nuggets of wisdom from receiving those emails, I'm also quick to press the Delete button without even opening them when my inbox gets too full and I don't feel like taking the time to read them.  However, the email in which this recipe was sent is one that I'm very glad I didn't delete!

Here is the recipe in the original form:

1 c. uncooked brown rice
2 tsp. olive oil
1 c. chopped onion
2 cloves garlic, pressed
1 lb. boneless skinless chicken breasts, cut into bite size pieces
1 tsp. curry powder
1 tsp. dried thyme
1/2 tsp. ground allspice
1/2 tsp. crushed red pepper
1/2 tsp. cracked black pepper
1/4 c. dry red wine (or juice of any kind, or water, or broth)
1 (15-ounce) can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 (14.5-ounce) can diced tomatoes, undrained

Prepare rice according to package directions, omitting salt and fat.  While rice cooks, heat oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium high heat.  Add onion and garlic; sauté 3 minutes or until tender.

Combine chicken and the next 5 ingredients (chicken through black pepper) in a bowl.  Add chicken mixture to pan; sauté 4 minutes.  Stir in wine, beans, and tomatoes.  Cover, reduce heat, and simmer 10 minutes or until tender.  Serve over rice.

I don't prepare this exactly as written.  For one thing, I make lots more rice than one cup, because some of my boys--especially Josiah--are huge rice fans.  And I use more chicken, because with eight of us eating here every evening, it's a good idea to throw some extra chicken in the pot.  :)  But even as far as the process goes, after I sauté the onions and garlic, I simply put the chicken into the pan and add the spices there while the chicken begins to cook, rather than taking the extra step of mixing the chicken and spices in a bowl.  Why in the world would I want to dirty another bowl anyway?  ;-)

I don't use as much red pepper as this calls for, since the majority of the people who gather around my table for supper have tastes as mild as--or milder than--my own.  Jeff puts his homemade spicy salsa on nearly everything, so even if I leave out some of the red pepper, he doesn't mind because his salsa more than makes up for it.

I'm not a wine-drinker, and I'm not much of a wine-cooker, so I usually end up using broth or some other kind of liquid instead of wine.

I've made this in a pan on top of the stove, and I've made it in a crockpot.  It's delicious either way.  Yum, just thinking about those scrumptious spices is making me salivate.  Uh oh, it's 11:30 PM, and I'm suddenly stomach-growling hungry.  This is not good.  Not good at all.  ;-)

Celebrating Six

The plate said to...
...so we did!  Turning six is a BIG deal.  :)

I hope to write more about this birthday boy tomorrow...
...but for tonight, I'm tucking myself into bed momentarily.  It's been a wonderful day, full to the brim; but through all the day's activities have run these thoughts in my head:

How blessed we are to have had our darling David here with us in our family for six whole years!

and

How did we ever live without him?!

In Which Davene Attempts to Be a Crafty Cake-Maker

I suppose my first mistake was actually opening a copy of Family Fun magazine that showed up in our mailbox a little while back.

My second mistake was looking at this picture...
...then thinking to myself, "Huh.  That doesn't look too hard.  I think maybe...gasp...even I...shocked expression on face...could make that!"...fanning myself vigorously.

My third mistake was letting David see the picture because of course, he then wanted that for his birthday, rather than a regular chocolate cake with chocolate icing with sprinkles on top.  I was stuck.  I had to make the cupcakes.

So I did--well, I and my little helpers.  I was feeling pretty good about how they turned out.  True, it took a LONG time to make all the cupcakes (we made a lot more than are pictured below), and ice them, and decorate them.  True, I got a headache.  But David was happy, so I was, too.

This afternoon, I snapped this picture of our finished project...
...and as I was taking the picture, I was thinking, "I sure hope someone will recognize that these are fish cupcakes.  I just really hope they know what they are.  Please, someone, just say they look like fish!"

I had to laugh this evening when those who were brave enough to venture a guess suggested things as diverse as sailboats or hedgehogs!!  I don't think anyone recognized them as being fish!  Oh dear, what did I do wrong???  ;-)

If you're reading this and you're one of those super-creative people who can whip out beautiful cupcakes that actually look like fish, and you can do that with your eyes closed and your hands tied behind your back, or you're the kind of mom who does all the activities in Family Fun, and they always turn out great, or you're the kind of person who WRITES for Family Fun, please be kind and don't snicker too loudly at my lame attempt.  I'm especially talking to you, Misty (aka Miss Party-Planner Extraordinaire); if I can hear you laughing all the way from your house to mine, I'm really going to get my feelings hurt.  (Remind me to tell you sometime about the incredible April Fools' party she hosted recently...)  ;-)

As I finish this tale of mistaken cupcake identities, I hope for two things:  first, that when David reads this at some point in the future, he'll know how much I love him because I was willing to spend hours trying to duplicate something in a magazine that I should have known I could never achieve!  :)  And secondly, I hope that when Josiah's birthday rolls around in a few months, he'll have forgotten all about the sailboat...er...hedgehog...I mean...FISH cupcakes, and will be perfectly content with a plain ol' chocolate cake!  ;-)
