When Josiah was seven years old, he was reading Tolkien. Not a kids' version. The real deal. See?
Tobin is eight now, and it's only been within the last six months or so that reading has begun to click for him (the beginning of that story can be found here). He picked up Little Bear recently and was so happy to be able to read that. Two of his younger siblings were happy to listen. :)
That's just one of the wonderful things about homeschooling. :)
My nephew turned 8 in January and just in the last couple of months finally clicked with reading. I think sometimes it just takes boys a little bit longer. Going at their own pace is so much better.
ReplyDeleteMy 8 year old daughter just clicked with reading as well. I read that many unschooled children will pick up reading naturally between 8 and 9 and since we unschool that made perfect sense. But because my older daughter read so early I will admit that I was concerned when she was 7 and still not reading. It is a wonderful blessing to be able to let our kids learn at their own pace!
